Simple Things

I had the privilege of chatting with Junus over a long breakfast at a traditional coffee shop in Central Jakarta recently.

Junus was the brain and hands that delivered one of Indonesia's most successful convenience shops. It was started with a heart of compassion to serve the local community who was then hard hit by the Asian Financial Crises in the late 1990s.

The young Junus then was a little disappointed when his joint venture partner sent a 70-year-old man to help him with the venture. The first meeting was 45 minutes of silent encounter sitting at a roadside stall, smoking, drinking coffee and just watching cars and people passing by.

Before Junus started asking why they are wasting time hanging around, the elderly man began to recite his detailed observations and counts of traffic flow, for man, woman, children, cars, trucks and motorcycles. It was almost a real time statistical analysis and immediate conclusion drawing of what to sell and where to place the first convenient store.

Young Junus learnt a precious lesson that morning and used the same simple method not just in starting a chain of successful convenient stores but also in many other businesses as well.

Make business and life simple. Prosper, smile and enjoy, simply.

A New Day

It is a brand new year. Someone said that doing the same things over and over again and expecting a new result is madness. So why not stay open to new ideas?

I read there were 2 brothers who did just that. They were running a comfortable business and someone came along and suggested a different business model. The brothers embraced the idea, took a risk and the rest is history. Revenues, profitability and its market capitalization continue to grow even during a somewhat difficult 2011. The stock quote is MCD and kids around the world (maybe adults too) love it – MacDonald’s. The man who sold them the idea was the legendary Ray Kroc.

As a headhunter who specialize in serving the entrepreneurial and family-controlled enterprises, I would humbly suggest to many middle market and billion dollar companies: if your business results has been flat or deteriorating or if your team ain't working, it could be time for new ideas, new blood and a Ray Kroc. Why do the same thing again for 2012 and hope for a different result?

The doomsday prophets think the world will come to an end in 2012. I have lots of things yet to do, places yet to go and people yet to meet. I don’t think the world will end this year. I will test new business ideas, live and enjoy this year, and beyond.

She Nearly Fainted

The joyful season of Christmas brings lots of fun, food and gifts. My 6 year old was so excited with a big box of gift that she couldn't wait till Christmas to open it. And open it she well did.

"I almost fainted!", she exclaimed.

It was a beautiful Barbie Doll set.

Most little girls would beam with excitement with Barbie Dolls. Not my girls. To them Barbie Dolls are yucks.

We make a mess when we assume. Don't.

For the record my daughters are fans of The Sylvanian Families and my son is excited over Lighting McQueen and trains. For now.
